Why Titanium for a Scale Cannon or Mortar
That’s simple for the following reasons

1) High tensile strength
2) Resistant to tarnishing
3) Chrome like finish when polished
4) Highly resistant to corrosion from black powder
5) Easy bore clean up between firing

My Cannons & Mortars will be made from grade 5 Titanium Alloy

Grade 5
is the most commonly used alloy. It has a chemical composition of 6% Aluminum, 4% Vanadium remainder titanium, and is commonly known as Ti6Al4V, Ti-6AL-4V or simply Ti 6-4. Grade 5 is used extensively in Aerospace, Medical, Marine, and Chemical Processing. And of course my Cannons & Mortars

Mechanical Properties

Density lb/in3 (g/cm3) 0.160 (4.43)

Here are some of the properties compared to Alloy Steel & Brass & cast iron

If you desire heat treating follow these Instructions

1.Anneal: 1,275 -1,400° F; (691 - 760° C), ˝ to 2 hours, air or furnace cool

2. Stress Relief Anneal: 1,000 -1,200° F; (538 - 649° C), 1 to 8 hours, air or furnace cool

3. Solution Heat Treatment: 1,675 -1,750° F; (913 - 954° C), 1 hour, water quench

4.Aging Treatment: 975 -1,025° F; (524 - 552° C), 4 to 8 hours - air cool

I’ll have photo’s of the Titanium Howitzer swivel cannon & base shortly I’m checking on getting the Barrel rifled. If its to costly I’ll just leave it smooth bore.

The cost wil be slightly higher than the price I charge for my Brass Bronze & steel cannons & Mortars that I sell now But no higher then other Quality cannons & Mortar that are available on the web today.

Special orders taken go to www.ClassicCannons.com for ordering Until I get this webpage up & running correctly.

Ti-6Al-4V Alloy  is the most widely used titanium grade. It is a two phase α+β titanium alloy, with aluminum as the

alpha stabilizer and vanadium as the beta stabilizer. This high-strength alloy can be used at cryogenic temperatures to about 800° F (427°

C). Ti-6Al-4V alloy is used in the annealed condition and in the solution treated and aged condition. Some applications include: compressor

blades, discs, and rings for jet engines; airframe and space capsule components; pressure vessels; rocket engine cases; helicopterrotor hubs; fasteners; critical forgings requiring high strength-to-weight ratios
